Stephen Finlay has written primarily on topics in metaethics and moral psychology, particularly on normative language and concepts, and the nature of normativity. He is the author of Confusion of Tongues: A Theory of Normative Language (OUP 2014), and around 50 articles. Currently he is a senior postdoctoral fellow at the University of Vienna, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Philosophy at the University of Southern California. His work has been funded by grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment of the Humanities. Between 2019 and 2024, he was the founding director of the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy at the Australian Catholic University. He has taught at the University of Southern California since 2002.
